  • The term Russian manicure is used to describe a particular precision prep method. The method itself is identifiable by the use of an e-file, various drill bits, and cuticle removal - usually using cuticle scissors.

    The purpose of this type of prep is to achieve the nicest possible result by the end of the treatment (essentially front-loading all of the work so there is no tidy-up required later on) and ensuring better product retention by making the nail plate as debris free as possible.

    During a Russian manicure, not only does the cuticle area get completely treated, but also the skin surrounding the nail. Dry or hard skin around the growth points and side walls also get treated, which is what creates the perfect fresh skin look!

  • Russian manicures have unfortunately received some negative attention in the media over the years, particularly around concerns about their safety. Like any nail technique, however, the safety of a Russian manicure comes down to how it is performed, the practitioner’s training, and their understanding of nail anatomy.

    When carried out correctly by a properly trained professional, a Russian manicure can be a safe and effective method of nail preparation. However, it is a highly precise technique, and there is very little room for error when working so closely to living tissue. A thorough understanding of nail anatomy, appropriate training and careful technique are therefore essential.

    As with any professional treatment, there will always be differences in how practitioners are trained and how techniques are carried out. Poor technique or insufficient training can increase the risk of damage, which is why choosing a manicurist who is properly trained and experienced is so important.

    For me, Russian manicure is about precision, cleanliness and creating the best possible foundation for your manicure. When performed correctly, it allows for beautifully clean preparation around the cuticle while maintaining the health and integrity of the natural nail.
